Rules & rating methodology

This is a fictional 84-game challenge, independent of official NHL schedules and season projections. Draft exactly one LW, C, RW, LD, RD and G. Officially listed D can fill either defense slot; handedness is displayed without claiming a verified side preference. Current roster IDs determine eligibility; line combinations and injury availability are not inferred.

League-wide prior-season totals and current-season totals are joined by player ID, including trades. Current observations receive 1.5× recency weight; the much larger previous season still dominates early. Skater per-60 rates shrink toward position-group league averages using 600 prior minutes. Goalies shrink saves toward observed league SV% using 500 prior shots. Reliability is observed exposure divided by observed-plus-prior exposure.

Offense: 40% goals/60, 30% assists/60, 30% shots/60 percentile. Defensive usage proxy: 70% average TOI and 30% inverse penalty rate percentile. Forward overall: 75% offense, 25% proxy; D overall: 50/50; goalie overall: shrunk-SV% percentile. Missing shot-quality, PP usage, EDGE and causal shot suppression are not invented. These fixed fantasy coefficients have not been historically calibrated.

The five skaters represent a core covering 35% of team minutes with league-average support. Scoring baseline is 3.05 goals; core offense changes its log rate by up to ±0.35, defensive usage by ±0.20 and goalie quality by ±0.30. Seven symmetric opponent-strength profiles, each faced 12 times, vary log scoring by ±0.22. Poisson goals and a weighted tied-game deciding goal produce 84 actual wins/losses. No overtime point is used in this challenge. Coefficients are transparent game assumptions, not official NHL predictions. Seed and result are saved locally; no account or server leaderboard.
